Stress Formula

Force per unit area in a solid. The area is perpendicular for tensile stress and parallel for shear stress.
Stress = applied force / cross-sectional area

σ = F / A
Force per unit area in a solid. The area is perpendicular to the force for tensile stress and parallel to it for shear stress.

Units: Newtons per square meter (Pascal).

Stress is calculated as the applied force divided by the cross-sectional area on which it acts.
